J.Post March 6: Jewish Identity, Israeli Identity

Dear editor,
Re: Israel's Exeter (February 20)

To describe the overall goal of the exclusive private high school, Havruta, its founders tell us that their graduates should have the commitment, intellectual resources and strong Israeli identity to help them develop into genuine leaders.

What I find disturbing is the fact that among all the quite respectable objectives there is no mention of a knowledge of either Jewish history or values that must be included as vital ingredients of Israeli culture.

In the absence of a linkage between Judaism and Israeli culture, I fear that the divide that presently and all too often separates Israeli and Jew will only grow wider. It is essential that new leadership be respectful of the bonds that tie our people to this Land and our mutual responsibility to one another.
